Character choices shape your card combinations
Origins combines a three-Axie team with turn-based card battles. Look beyond one character’s appearance or rarity to how the team’s cards fit together. The official guide introduces free starters for learning this system.
Learning with starters and using NFTs are different
Starter battles are separate from breeding or trading NFT Axies. This guide covers Origins and does not combine its rules with Classic. Learn the team-and-card relationship before considering whether asset features matter to you.
Read three Axies as a team of connected card roles
When reading a team, identify what each Axie's cards are intended to do and how those purposes connect across all three. Visual preference can coexist with a plan for card roles. Asking which options a card leaves afterward is a more useful introduction to composition than comparing rarity alone.
Separate team revisions from decisions within a turn
An editorial review method is to distinguish why you would revise the team from why you selected a card during a turn. With a fixed team, focus on the action's purpose; for a team revision, name the role you want to add. This interprets the retained Origins overview, not current card balance or measured matches.
Reading all three Axies together reveals overlapping functions and unanswered situations. Before changing the team, name the situation for which an option is missing. This remains an Origins learning exercise, separate from Classic or breeding conditions.
The Origins guide updated June 20, 2024 describes alternating turns and checking each card’s energy cost. Unused cards and energy do not carry to the next turn by default. Keep is a separate choice that spends Energy Fragments to retain a card. The concept compares using a card now with retaining it for a later combination; it does not rank current cards or prescribe an optimal sequence.
Separate practice, ranked battles and friendly duels
The same document distinguishes reward-free Practice, ranked competition and Friendly Duels with friends. These are documented battle settings, not confirmation of current reward amounts, eligibility, seasonal balance or actual match results. Its update date is separate from the October 10, 2026 body review. Do not transfer this reading to Classic, NFT breeding or first registration.
