Ship comparison changes with combat, exploration or mining

The Gameplay Whitepaper distinguishes combat, exploration and mining ships. Compare combat ships through mobility, durability and firepower; exploration ships through speed, range and detection equipment; and mining ships through asteroid-belt access, collection equipment and cargo capacity. These are choices for different activities, rather than a ranking in which larger ships are always best.

Separate component roles at a dock

The same document describes adjusting components at a dock. Weapons concern attack methods, energy systems power the ship’s systems, propulsion concerns movement, and cargo or drone bays and multifunction slots support transport and added functions.
